Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description/Blazon
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a black disc bearing two crossed gold artillery shells in base surrounded by a blue circular motto scroll bearing the words "GEARED TO MAINTAIN" arcing in base in gold letters surmounted at the top of the scroll by a red gear wheel of seven spokes and eight teeth with eight blue flames extending to the middle of the black disc.

Symbolism
Crimson and yellow are the colors associated with Ordnance.  The gear wheel with radiating flames has long been associated with the unit, denoting maintenance of equipment and simulating the unit's numerical designation:  i.e., one wheel, eight gear teeth and seven spokes.  The rays represent the zeal of personnel in performance of their duties.  The shells allude to weaponry and the unit's mission and further suggest the two campaign credits for service in Europe during World War II.  Black refers to oil and petroleum lubricants which denote smooth operation of the wheel.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 13 March 1987.
